As Ravichandran Ashwin returns to the Indian ODI squad,

there were concerns about his lack of recent game time. However, Rohit Sharma views him as a “match-winner” and values his ability to provide an attacking mindset in white-ball cricket. India has chosen to rest Kuldeep Yadav for the first two ODIs against Australia, with Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli set to return for the 3rd ODI. Vice-captain Hardik Pandya will also be rested for the first two matches of the series.

Ashwin’s recall was necessitated due to an injury to Axar Patel. He, along with Washington Sundar, will be competing for the third spinner’s slot in the World Cup, depending on Axar’s recovery. Despite not playing much international white-ball cricket lately, Ashwin has been in good form in domestic white-ball cricket, showcasing his all-round abilities.

While Sundar may have better batting credentials and can counter spin as a left-hander, his performance against spin in ODIs and T20s has been less impressive compared to Ashwin. The selectors face a tough choice between the two based on the upcoming games against Australia and the pitch conditions.
