These alleged conflicts came to light after Sri Lanka narrowly defeated Pakistan in the 2023 Asia Cup.As captain Babar Azam expressed concerns about the performances of some veteran players, reports indicated an increase in animosity within the team. Fast bowler Shaheen Shah Afridi vigorously asked the captain to recognise the contributions of others who had performed well in response to Babar’s remarks, sparking an argument between them. Mohammad Rizwan intervened to mediate this altercation.
Rizwan strongly expressed his message of solidarity and unity in reaction to these rumors. Rizwan shared a picture on his social medi post containing group of people standing together beneath the flag showing unity. Rizwan also shared an impassioned Urdu poetry that emphasized the value of community and exchanging ideas with the image. The poem tells about importance of solidarity where joy and sadness are part and parcel of the same team.
Cricket fans were alarmed by these rumors because it seemed the team was having internal problems. There were some questions and concerns regarding the team’s cohesion, but Rizwan’s message of unity and Shaheen Afridi’s later tweet, titled “Family,” allayed those concerns.
